Experiment 2 Feedback

The intention of publishing the feedback below is so that all students can benefit by understanding the strengths and weakness’ of a range of projects. Please take the time to review other students work with these comments in mind. If you have any questions or would like any further clarification don’t hesitate to ask me during the studio session.

Daniella
Key strength of the scheme:
Nicely detailed spaces, with a good sense of the use of the architecture. Good thought to materiality and structure has been considered and integrated with architecture very well. Good play on light.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Some scaling issues appear with one of your spaces, and more thought could have been afforded to circulation. Good scheme, though it lacks that X-Factor to make it wonderful.

Arlene

Key strength of the scheme:
An amazing experiential set of spaces, providing an interesting architectural journey. Spaces are well defined, with your ramps playing a particularly strong role in your scheme.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
One of your most interesting and strong aspects of your architecture can never really be fully seen and appreciated. Some dead space that needs to be activated for a greater experience for the occupants.

Rina
Key strength of the scheme:
Good image captures of your environment, showing of some interesting elements. Lovely axonometric and texture sketches, very well laid out.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
The space is almost completely unusable, you have done well to capture some fairly nice images of a very convoluted set of architecture. One room is completely inaccessible, and the other can only be squeezed into with quite a lot of effort. Very claustrophobic to be in.

Yvette
Key strength of the scheme:
Very neat overall presentation, with all elements tightly controlled. Excellent inspirational images, and extra information on your thoughts and clients, related well into your architecture. Good attention to detail in your environment.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Some ambiguities in your environment, such as elements not fitting together well. A slight overuse of coloured lights detract from the sense of space in your architecture.

Barnaby
Key strength of the scheme:
Superb textures, and thought to the extension of how your textures may be combined. Some truly elegant and well controlled spaces, with a lovely sense of geometry.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Possibly the overuse of symmetry in your inside environment detracts from your spaces slightly, and doesn’t speak as strongly to your client as it could. There are also a couple of dead spaces.

Claire
Key strength of the scheme:
Lovely textures, and very nice axonometrics. There is a clear sense from your images on the use of your architecture.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Environment not scaled correctly. There is some attempt to ameliorate this issue, with some well scaled elements, but this is a major oversight. Some dead spaces, and odd moments in your architecture.

Jason
Key strength of the scheme:
Lovely monumental sense of space, with a strong play on relationship of basic elements. It would work great as a memorial structure.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Overly simple in terms of the spaces created. No amps, no textures, and a lack of clear ideas of how these spaces will be used as your clients laboratories.

Eugene
Key strength of the scheme:
A complex yet understandable set of spaces. Excellent use of repetition of elements, with a good rhythm to your overall architecture. Very good circulation, and an elegant sculpture garden.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Your Axonometric drawings are the least attractive element of your scheme, having a messy aspect to them at times, in contrast to your architecture.

Joey
Key strength of the scheme:
Lovely overall form with an elegant interplay of structure and space. Some exciting shapes are visible in your environment, making a inhabitant want experience more.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Unfortunately, a lot of the excitement is just decoration, never allowing the occupants to feel welcomed by your architecture. The player start is out in the middle of space, killing a player within half a second of playing your map.

Sara
Key strength of the scheme:
A modest set of spaces very well achieved, and comfortable to be in. Good explanations on the nature of the spaces with good attention to detail.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Some dubious elements, and small wasted spaces detract slightly from your environment. Some of your axonometric drawings need to be tightened up.

Giselle
Key strength of the scheme:
A very well laid out scheme, providing some significantly beautiful moments, and the architecture seems to be quite sensitive to your clients needs.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
You images don’t quite display the architecture as well as they could have. Your sketches could also do with a bit more care in their execution.

Nazlee
Key strength of the scheme:
You outside space is quite elegant. Excellent graphic representations with your 3 coloured montages.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Your inside space is slightly underdeveloped, not really showing a clear sense of circulation. There are dead spaces, and traps areas that trap a wanderer, with no discernible avenue for escape.

Bassel
Key strength of the scheme:
A good natural sense of design and composition, with elements in the outside and meeting space relating well with each other. Excellent image captures considering the spaces.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Architecture seems underdeveloped, especially the inside space which is a box with a clunky staircase leading into it. Overall needed more time and care.

Rosalind
Key strength of the scheme:
Some very dramatic spaces have been created, with a good sense of rhythm to the journey though your building.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Lighting needs wok, it is too dark in a lot of places. The building is almost too big, making it confusing to find your way at time in the spaces.

Rainis
Key strength of the scheme:
Some very nice geometric moments have been created. Good use of detailing to help define your spaces.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
PINK! The colours can seem jarring at times, detracting from a set of spaces could have been displayed in a better light.

Jarlath
Key strength of the scheme:
Good exploration of the technology, and where you have applied your own custom textures the spaces have been enhanced greatly.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Not many of your own custom textures to be seen, mainly UT textures that detract from any elegance of space that may exist. Some lost spaces, that don’t seem to have a clear reason for being placed where they are.

Phillip
Key strength of the scheme:
Nice application of custom textures, bringing some life to a few of your spaces, plus some interesting architectural moments that have promise of being a very experiential architecture.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Generally underdeveloped scheme, needing more care and thought to the clients’ needs. The UT environment kills a player instantly, needing adjustment of the player start to be able to lay the map.

Tim
Key strength of the scheme:
Strong sense of the spaces created, with some very nice “journeys” to be traversed, showing some excellent vistas of your architecture.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Some images don’t quite do the created spaces justice. A lack of purposeful detail makes the spaces seem cold and unwelcoming at times.

Experiment 1 Feedback

The intention of publishing the feedback below is so that all students can benefit by understanding the strengths and weakness’ of a range of projects. Please take the time to review other students work with these comments in mind. If you have any questions or would like any further clarification don’t hesitate to ask me during the studio session.

Daniella
Key strength of the scheme:
A high level of complexity handled quite well, with some thought to the structural elements.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
The Animations aren’t very controlled, generally passing through walls, and not focussing on significant “moments” of your architecture.

Arlene

Key strength of the scheme:
Excellent consideration to materials and thinking of your building as a single entity.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Spaces not fully defined, it seems as if the gallery was just tacked on at the end.

Rina
Key strength of the scheme:
Good materials, nice play with your stairs, interesting take on form.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Videos supposed to be 10 seconds only, and no progressive sections were shown.

Yvette
Key strength of the scheme:
Good textures, and thought to materials. Good texture tiling and consideration to size of your materials. Some spatial elements seem well considered.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Animations weren’t 10 seconds, too quick, didn’t show anything significant. Spaces seem to be a little bit random at times, with lots of geometry used without a clear purpose.

Barnaby
Key strength of the scheme:
Excellent use of repetition and symmetry, creating strong visuals within your spaces.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
It seems at times that the spaces weren’t quite defined well enough, rather the building being more about circulation and movement than usable spaces.

Claire
Key strength of the scheme:
Your initial words for the artist’s works were thoughtful, and showed promise for your thought to your spaces. You have an eclectic take on design.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Spaces never fully refined, seems a little thrown together at the end. More time and thought on your final scheme could have helped to realise your design intent, that only just started to emerge at the end.

Jason
Key strength of the scheme:
Interesting eventuating form shows good progression and improvement through the session.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Animations are not ten seconds, only one animation shows a progressive section. Some of the spaces don’t seem particularly comfortable to be in or move through.

Eugene
Key strength of the scheme:
Well controlled animations, showing significant moments, such as the well thought out structure of your buildings. Excellent development through the project.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
One thing, maybe the spaces seem overly “busy” at times. It could have been worth taking stock of the whole project at the end, and paring it back to just the awesome bits.

Joey
Key strength of the scheme:
Good play with form, providing some very interesting “moments” in your spaces. Some excellent pieces can be found in your design.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
No progressive sections in your animations, never really get a good “feel” for what the inside of your space is.

Sara
Key strength of the scheme:
A definite progression to the work throughout the project, with the theme constantly being developed and modified.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
The spaces weren’t never really fully developed, with the feel that elements were placed in because they had to be there, more time and refinement could have helped with your design.

Giselle
Key strength of the scheme:
Excellent creativity, and thought to form and materials. Some nice ideas about transitions of spaces.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Animations aren’t smooth, as if you don’t have scene transitions enabled, Also should only be 10 seconds. Spaces can appear a little confusing at times, but the emergent whole grows on you.

Nazlee
Key strength of the scheme:
Interesting play on form and material. Some really unique takes on defining your spaces. Excellent video.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
There don’t appear to be walls in your above ground spaces. Possibly some of your ideas could have been developed more to highlight their particular strengths.

Bassel
Key strength of the scheme:
This is a unique and difficult concept realised quite well. A good juxtaposition of materials and textures, incorporated in an interesting way.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Spaces lack a sense of structure to suggest what might be holding your building up.

Rosalind
Key strength of the scheme:
Simple forms can be quite powerful. There is a good sense of form and space with your above ground space, you can imagine light pouring through the curved glass roof in quite spectacular ways.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Supposed to have 3x10 second videos, not 1x90 second video. Overall form is a bit underdeveloped, never really extending your creativity to what it could have been. More effort is needed to realise your ideas.

Rainis
Key strength of the scheme:
Excellent play on unique structural forms. A very “complete” set of spaces that you can imagine in reality.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
As the final scheme developed, it seems that you lost some of the initial drama that was evident in you previous versions, or possibly your image captures just didn’t show some of your elements in the best possible light.

Jarlath
Key strength of the scheme:
A strong sense of reality, showing a clear idea of these buildings being “buildable”. A good sense of your experimentation on your blog.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Interiors seem under-developed, never realising a good sense of circulation through your buildings. You need more images showing off your spaces as a person would inhabit them.

Phillip
Key strength of the scheme:
There are bold strokes of form and structure as your roof pierces into your interior spaces. Excellent last minute dash to realise some nice concepts.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
Time constraints at the end show your quite interesting forms to be rushed. If you had carried the vigour that you showed in the final week through the entire project this could have been an awesome set of spaces.

Tim
Key strength of the scheme:
Excellent progression and development to your work, showing a real dedication to improvement of your design. This relentlessness has eventuated in a elegant piece of architecture.
Most significant weakness of the scheme:
There is some wasted space in your design, especially at the converging points of your walls in the upper spaces, this could have been handled with a bit more care.
